Hello Emma,
It isn't far away from your birthday now. You must be getting excited! It will be really great for you to be nine. I brought some birthday presents for you last weekend (Saturday 15/5/04 and Sunday 16/5/04). It isn't much really but I hope you will like it. I got you another Tintin book, a Roald Dahl book, a stationery set which looked like fun, a Madeline video, an elephant hand mitt for washing with and some nice things to eat. You can see what I sent in the photo below.
Birthday presents for Emma (27/5/2004, nine years old today!)
I posted it off last Tuesday (18/5/04) to the last address I have for NaiNai. I hope it will reach you in time!
This morning I helped out at the Sunday School, which was a lot of fun. I was doing things on the computer with some of the bigger children from Sudan. There were two boys called Marna and Jew and a girl called Nyaluit. Jew is probably only 14 or 15 years old but he is already much taller than me! He is a cousin of Deng. I think you can remember how tall Deng is!
Other than that I didn't do terribly much this weekend. I studied for two assignments that are due soon. I also reread the book "Hexwood" by Dianne Wynne Jones, which was a bit naughty of me as I should have been doing more study. It is a great book though and one you would like to read I think. All of Dianne Wynne Jones's books are great but this is one of the best ones.
I had better go to bed now as it is getting late. I am sending you my best happy thoughts. I hope they reach you!
Love you heaps and heaps,
Aaron

Hi Emma,
I writing this at the Deakin University computer labs. It is just past midnight so I am now officially 37 years old. Oh dear, I am getting old aren't I!
Your birthday isn't very far off now either. You will be 9 years old!! That is great. I will be going to the city tomorrow morning (Saturday 15/5/04) to buy some presents for you. I'll probably buy you a book (yes again:-)) but I'll look for other nice things as well. I'll just post them to the old address I have for NaiNai in Beijing. Hopefully you can still get them. I don't know your proper address, but I am trying to find out.
I have been reading a really good book that I'm sure you would like Emma. It is called "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman. It is about a twelve year old girl called Lyra who lives in a world a bit like ours but it is also a bit magical. Each person has a special spirit animal that is closely bonded to them and stays with them always. In the story someone is kidnapping children and Lyra is caught up in trying to solve what is happening to the children and their spirit animals. It is a bit scary in parts but it is a very exciting story. I feel sure you would really enjoy this book :-).
Wishing you all the very best Miss Emma. I hope you are looking forward to your birthday and that you are having a good time. I also hope my presents will get to you on time!
Lots and lots of love,
Aaron

Hi Emma,
I hope you are fine. It is one year since you left Australia and one year and one day since I last saw you. I still remember that time very clearly. In fact memories of you pop up in my mind all the time, which is a very good thing for me! I really hope it isn't too long before we can make contact.
I finished an assignment early this morning and got it in on time. That was a big relief. In fact that was pretty much all I did for the whole of the weekend just gone (Saturday 8/5/04 and Sunday 9/5/04). Sometimes I think my brain is getting too old for doing all this study! But it is worthwhile I feel.
Sending you my deepest love Emma and wishing you all the very best.
Lots and lots of love,
Aaron

Hello Em,
Welcome to May! May is an eventful month for me. It was the month in which you were born (almost nine years ago!). It was also the month that you relocated to China. So it is nearly a year since I have seen you last. It makes me feel very sad when I think about that, but I still have faith that we can re-establish contact. I really really hope that will happen!!!
I didn't go to work today as I had my monthly rostered day off from work. I stayed at home and did study mostly, then in the afternoon I had another appointment with the dentist. That wasn't much fun but I needed it to be done. You already know this but it really isn't a good idea to neglect your teeth. Silly me!!!
The weather is pretty cold now. When I get up in the mornings I make a hot drink, normally tea, to keep warm. Then I sit in the sun room and watch Lulu eating her breakfast on the deck. As soon as she has finished eating, the two pigeons fly down and gobble up the food that is left. Lulu is pretty good in that she doesn't try to catch the pigeons - probably because they are quite big. It is certainly a nice sight in the morning to see everyone having breakfast together!
Love you heaps and heaps Miss Em.
Love and best wishes,
Aaron
